You never know what u will get in CO. there will be snow on the ground but the sun is so hot sometimes that it melts the snow, then that will freeze overnight so it does get icy. But it is kind of nice to ski without all the heavy snow gear. I've seen people out there skiing in short sleeves, no hats, etc. l would say there is more chance of icy conditions in CO, at least where I've been (Breckinridge, Vail, all those places west of Denver). But then again, if it is not icy CO is a great place to ski. ;)

depends on what you want. Here in VT, the mtns are no where near as tall as in Colorado but with the number of tourists that come here year in and year out, something is obviously going right.

Overall, it is not even close. Colorado is far better. But there is nothing wrong with Vermont if there is fresh snow, although it can get damn cold there. The thing is they do not get nearly as much fresh snow as Colorado, so Vermont is more likely to have ice and that awful old crusty snow - sounds like you're skiing on a rock.

if u time it right with fresh snow, vermont can be great.but it can get icy in places if fresh snow hasnt fallen in a while, depends on the resort.colorado is known for champagne dry powder while vermonts tends to be wetter snow thus resulting in ice..but i've also been in places out west when it was icey & i've been in vermont when it was totally powder--all depends on how the season is going.right now conditions r pretty darn good for this early in the year in vermoint plus there is a big storm coming up on sunday into monday.if this winter continues like this then vermont can be awsome!!!! but i'm biased living in new emgland

are you kidding? COlorado of course because we are in a a drier state which helps us make 'powder' conditions. Vermont is on the eastern side which has a lot of humidity which creates harder snow and more icy conditions. However, l would not plan a trip in the next few weeks because we are in a drought and only have a 20'' base on the mountain *tear*

colorado is known for it is light dry powder but when they go a day or two without fresh snow the top surface turns to a hard wind-blown crust.. l find this condition worst than corn snow
l was in vail 2 weeks ago & there was nothing worth skiing on Right now here in the east the snowing is pretty good. Last night they were grooming & blowing snow to build up the base so conditions were worst tthan they've been but all that grooming topped with the snow thats been falling all day should make for a great weekend Eastern resorts have gotten a really bad rep for ice & last year january was really crappy but december was great, febuary & march were incredible we made our last runs in may

Rather than focus on a state (that is a big area), or ice (there is lots of other bad terrain), l think u would be better off asking a more general question.
l also really wonder if some of the people who responded have actually been to both places. l have, & soem of what they're saying is more cliche than real.
First if all, is the issue really ice, or is it something like '' l am a beginner / intermediate skier & l hate to fall, so who is got the best conditions for me to ski in?''
The answer is, it depends on the RESORT (not the state), the time of year & what the weather is like that season.
For example, l can tell u that Okemo (voted the top groomed place in the east for about 10 years in a row), has little ice, & much less crud that anywhere l have skied in CO. Crud can knock u over too. l can tell u that Smuggler is Notch is loaded with powder. Both of those r in Vermont, but they r very far apart. And places like Stowe & Sugarbush r great too.
On the other hand, many resorts in Colorado r great when they get snow (so r places Utah by the way, & Jackson Hole in Wyoming can be great too). it depends what u want. l would question anyone who tells u that one ''state'' is better for everything.
In addition to the snow, u may want to look at the vertical drop (does it need to be huge?), proximity to civilization/ cities, & culture too. After all, you're probably going to do more than just ski.
So before u decide where to go, focus on a resort, not a state. There r great ones (and not so great ones)in lots of states.
good luck & enjoy the trip

it really depends on where u r & what kind of expenses you're planning to make. I've never actually been to Colorado, but l live in Vermont & have skied at Bolton Valley & Smuggler is Notch & l found that Vermont skiing, especially at Smuggler is Notch, is the best. Mainly because Smugg is is a nice place to stay, & it always has a variety of events, & it has runs for all skill levels & some sweet terrain parks. As far as icy conditions go, u will not see that much in late December, January, & February, so u will be good until then, but do not get me wrong, i'm sure Colorado has some good skiing, but Vermont skiing is all l know, & l love it.

The skiing is usually better in Colorado. Better terrain, bowls chutes, powder is better. l do not think u will see much ice in Colorado either at least l never have. They call hard pack ice in Colorado. Having said that there r some advantages to skiing in Vermont especially if u r form the east coast. Getting there is easier & far Less expensive. Most of the time the powder in Vermont is fine. If u r looking for a good mountain with lots of powder check out Jay Peak. They get more snow than any other ski area in the east by far averaging over 350 inches a year. This is due to the lake effect snows & is more snow than many ski areas out west. It is a great mountain & the closest to a western ski area u will find in the east IMHO.
