Hey...
l have skiied once before in California and picked it up very well... l did not wear a helmet at all and felt perfectly safe
However this year l am going skiing in Canada in Quebec where the ice is apparently more hard and slippery... My friends are all taking helmets to wear on the slopes but l tried one on and they look absolutly ridiculous... l do not like them AT ALL and it means l cannot wear my funky new hats... BUT l do not wanna crack my head open and die, do i?
What do you suggest? l trake this big beast of a helmet with me? Or do l hopefully survive without one? (l did not hurt myself in California)...
Any advice is good thanks :)

yeah l know l need to be safe... l ws just asking the opinion of people who ski and whether they wear one or not

better safe than sorry is what l always say. Do you think stitches across your face would look more ridiculous than a simple helmet?

Wear the helmet. It can save ur life. When u r done skiing, then wear the funky hats. Remember that a helmet may not necessarily prevent a concussion, but it will lessen it. There r many different designs of good helmets, also add on helmet skins that make them quite distinctive. l am working on a tiger to add to mine. I've worn helmets for some skiing since the 60's, much more over the past 10 years when the shredders quit paying attention to where they were & started hitting people on the hill. A helmet saved my life 3 years ago when l was battered by a reckless snowboarder in a family slow zone.
It is not whether u can be hurt by a fall, rather can it lessen an injury caused by some one else. Do u wear a seat belt? When l started driving they were only in race cars, one accident & the belts saved our lives. Wear the helmet. Get some add on covers.

HELMET----------canadian skiing is intense, they ski off frozen waterfalls, ridges etc. ive gotten 3 concussions from bad falls 1 of which l was wearing a helmet, but imagine what would have happened if iwasnt. l can never be found without a helmet, it also gives you security which alowws one to push their limits to an extent

If the helmet fits & does not impede ur vision, then wear it. Unless of course u know when you're going to be in a nasty accident & get a traumatic brain injury, then u can just wear it that day.

l will admit that it took me a while to come around to wearing a helmet, & there is a lot of days where l do not wear one & should. But this is something l am trying to get better about. Ask any serious skier who has been skiing for more than a few years to tell u about the injuries they've sustained over the years - they will give u a laundry list. If a helmet prevents even one of those, its worth it.

Sigh.
This will not be a popular answer.

There r people out there who would have u wrapped in foam just to cross the street. The fact is that there r risks inherent in skiing, read the back of ur lift ticket. Having said that, head injuries make up a VERY small percentage of injuries.

(Guess what? The majority of injuries on-hill happen where? In the LODGE! Bet u did not know that. Anyone who tells u that u MUST wear a helmet to be safe should be wearing theirs in the lodge. Is not it funny that they take theirs off in, statistically, the most dangerous place? Hmmmm. (We will get back to actual vs. percieved danger later.)

Now, snow conditions do not really have anything to do with it, because unlike snowboarders, skier head injuries, by & large, r not the result of hitting the ground, they're the result of hitting either objects or other skiers/riders. ( l know, l am ignoring the terrain park but l do not see u spending much time there.) But here is the fun part! - There has been NO correllation between helmet use & injury reduction. Is it b/c people with helmets ski faster because they feel ''safer''? Who knows?

So, the question becomes, do u ski at a reasonable speed? Always in control? And do u trust everyone around u not to hit you?

So, if ur issue is do l wear my funky new hats or crack my head open & die, then u already know the answer. But u deserve to be perfectly aware that the odds of actually being made a vegetable on vacation is very low, (<---Actual danger, you're probably safer ON the hill than on the drive TO the hill) but the possible outcome is one that most people shudder to think about (<--- Perceived danger. Drooling. Scary.)

Should u wear a helmet. Yes. Your reason for not wearing one is stupid. Do l wear a helmet? Sometimes..

A helmet will not protect u in every accident. There r accidents when a helmet will prevent injury that u would have suffered if u were not wearing one. There r other accidents where a helmet will reduce the severity of injuries. There r no accidents where a helmet will increase the severity of an accident (or a vanishingly small number). The answer is obvious, is not it?

l wear one. l started wearing it when l explained to my daughter why she should wear one, & realised that all the arguments applied equally to me. Before l wore a helmet l suffered a couple of mild concussions. Accidents happen.

The only skiers l know that do not wear a helmet do not have a lot to protect anyway, if you get my drift. Buckle up!

get one and wear it all the time, if you want to choose fashion over safety go ahead. l have been skiing for 31 years and l only bought a helmet 2 seasons ago l even wear it when l am skiing with my 4 and 5 year old girls on green runs, within 5 years l see most resorts making it compulsory to wear helmets ( in Australia anyway )
